Philips, the same big mainstream company that helped create the CD player, and many other mainstream household products for consumers (including my current TV) – is now producing sex toys for men, women and couples. The vibrators look kind of space age and nothing like the cock shaped dildos I’m use to seeing in the porn shops.

I like the fact that philips did research to find out if couples would be more willing to use sex toys if there were some made for and marketed for couples, as opposed to the majority of sex toys that are available today that are marketed more for individual use.  Philips press release states that 35% of the couples they questions agreed that they would be more apt to buy and use sexual enhancers made for couples. I personally believe that number would be higher if all respondents would be 100% truthful to researchers about sex and sexual preferences.

I enjoyed seeing philip’s numbers for how large the intimate health segment is and should continue to grow in the future, yet I wonder if they will really capture much of that market. Certainly name brand recognition will help sell their new vibrators, to consumers and to stores that would most likely not take on a new sales contract with a sex only company like Tantus. The shape and overall appearance of the new line of vibes from philips will certainly appeal to some of the shy first time sex toy shoppers, and certainly buying a set of those vibrators would not raise eyebrows of passer-bys like having a huge anatomically correct dildo in your shopping basket would. However I think that consumers will ultimately choose other “marital aids” for couples over the philips for the most part.

The price point of the new vibes is reasonable, but at $100 – $200 for some non-penetrating sex toys, I believe a majority of sex toy consumers will shop around, and probably choose less expensive items, and devices that stimulate the inside as well as the outside. Today you can get high quality vibrators that also give the penetration that many women enjoy, for less. Rabbit style vibrators are popular because they give multiple pleasures at the same time, and you can get vibrating cockrings that increase pleasure for couples for under $20.

Certainly philips, and the stores that carry their new vibrators will get some sales. some of these sales will come just because there is a lack of selection at these stores, and an impulse buy of a sexual device is common at mainstream stores including walgreens and wal mart. However, with sex toy shopping so easy on the internet, the communication between women about the sex toys they enjoy and reasons for enjoying them both online, and at sex toy parties, I believe we’ll still see women and couples choosing other devices to increase their sexual pleasure and health.

Trying to jump on the bandwagon of selling sex toys that look more like art rather than a huge veined cock is a good idea. Companies like Lelo and fun factory have already been producing adult products in this genre. The research may show people are willing to purchase intimate products marketed to couples, certainly KY with their his and hers lube have been profiting from that, but when it comes to vibrators and dildos, people are going to choose the right size and functions they desire, and the philips line does not offer the kind of variety to suit all the varied tastes of sexually active people in the world.

Fun factory’s “delight” S shaped vibrator / g-spot silicone sex toy gets the number one rating in the October issue of Good Housekeeping (U.K. edition). I was surprised to see a sex toy rated by what I had thought of as an old-timey magazine, and glad to see that times are changing, in many ways.

I stumbled across an article from fox news talking about the upcoming issue and it’s rating of the best vibrators as tested by a group of it’s readers. Unfortunately I could not find the article when I clicked the link in the article. I am guessing that they have one of those auto-detect things on their web site that takes me to the USA version since I am not in the UK.

The only thing I could find on the USA version of their “allaboutyou.com” was a lame article about sex toys that look like art or other objects “that you might want to leave out when you have visitors”. Quite lame, although I did enjoy the porcelain hollow dildo pictured, it had a cork and could be filled with hot water or cold water for “temperature play”. So the USA version of good housekeeping is still prude, even though the U.K. edition found that only 13% of it’s sex toy testers were vibrator virgins.

So I continued my online research, hoping to find another article or blog that would list what good housekeeping had decided were the best sex toys from the reader’s (aged 30 – 65) thorough testing. I found an article posted by the register that listed four of the top rated from the magazine.

The delight vibrator from fun factory won the number one spot. I took a look at the delight, and I can see why, it looks comfortable, easy to use and made for both internal and external sexual stimulation and satisfaction.

Deputy ed June Walton said “it’s widely recognized that many young, single women own vibrators, our survey discovered that they’re just as popular among our readers” – Well I find that statement not only ignorant, but stereotypical, and it is proof of the ignorance of these old time publications, how out of touch in certain areas they have been for years.

Apparently the rampant rabbit vibrator came in the top ratings at number four. Here is a link to the deluxe rampant rabbit vibrator in our online store.

I’ve heard the stories about swingfest in Miami Florida, the annual swingers convention that brings people from all over the world who are into “the lifestyle”.

It sounds like fun, but reading this press release on yahoo finance made me realize that it may be a great place to go sex toys shopping. The press release says that they have 45,000 square feet of space dedicated to vendors who will be selling all kinds of lingerie, adult toys, and more. It’s my kind of party!

I’m betting there will be sex swings on display, and who knows what else. I’m kind of doubting that they would allow photos to be taken inside the exhibit hall, so perhaps next year I will get a peek into the swingers shopping world that comes to Miami. In the meantime, I am glad that we offer pretty much the same selection of novelties and sex hardware that you could find there, along with a much larger variety of sex movies than they could possibly fit in the hotel.

There has been some talk and news in the sex toys industry the past year or two talking about making sex toys from phthalate free materials. Now it seems that the “green monster” that is taking over our pop culture has made it’s way to sex toys parties as well. Recent article in the sun sentinel highlights a newer company that focuses on the green side of sex toys with private parties, they were even featured on the discovery channel, here’s a video clip.

I’m not aware of any real health issues from sex toy use, aside from some people who found their private parts irritated if they have a latex allergy. I am glad that the adult industry is taking a proactive approach to manufacturing and advertising dildos and vibrators that are made from healthier materials. If nothing else it will help people to become more aware of the materials used in all the products we purchase, for the bedroom, or not.

I have seen many sex toys labeled phthalate free over the past year, but we need to remember that there have been healthy “green” sex toys available for years. Quality silicone based sex toys are made from medical grade silicone and they are a non porous, non leaching material. Not only are they healthy as far as the materials themselves, but they are easier to get really clean, since they are non porous.

Silicone sex toys can be washed in a dishwasher, put into hot water before use, or put in the freezer to make them cold. The silicone based “personal products” for men and women usually cost a bit more than the latex ones, but they last longer. So the next time you are shopping for your next “marital aid”, keep an eye out for the phthalate free labeling, but also compare to the silicone based toys in the same genre, as they have been green and healthy for years.

This is one of the sex toys that I try to keep a secret. This is the first time I have written and one of the few times I have discussed this powerful vibrator. They call it the magic wand for a reason, it’s big, it’s powerful, and it works well, with no batteries required. Adults beware, this is not just some novelty or toy that will disappear quickly, in fact it could take on a much bigger role in the sexual relationship than you ever imagined.

It’s long handle makes it easy to use, and easy on the wrists. It’s large vibrating head makes it easy to get strong vibrations all around the labia and clitoris, in fact you can just hold this bad boy in the general area of the clit and the vibrations will find their way home. It’s a plug in model, so you can count on consistent strong vibes (although there are two settings for vibrating intensities) without worry of the batteries getting weak or needing to be replaced in the middle of your sexual liaisons. With all these bonuses you may wonder why it is not THE most popular sex toy on the market, well it may be one of the best at doing what it does, it does have some drawbacks.

It’s long handle and large vibrating head make sit a powerful tool, much like a large shotgun is a powerful tool that makes it easy to hit the target, it’s large size does not lend itself well to be hidden from prying eyes. Some people like to hide their sex toys so guests or young ones can’t find them, this behemoth would take some considerable  creativity to hide. Of course it is sold as a back massager, so leaving it out for anyone to see and letting the world know that you prefer to self massage at home rather than spending the time and money to get hands on massage work, well they may just assume it’s only use is to reach those tight muscles in your shoulders.

The powerful vibrations that you’ll enjoy from this tool can be numbing after a while, this is a serious concern. Too much use of any vibrator can desensitize the clit, and make it harder for you get off, and especially harder to get off without the motorized vibrations. This can be a real problem if you later try having sex with only human stimulation, one of my good friends actually left the girl he loved very much because things got to the point where sex without the magic wand was not satisfying for her. So definitely check in with yourself, or keep a little sex diary, if it takes you 10 minutes to get the big O when you first start using this thing, and a month later you find you’ve been using it 6 times a day, everyday, and it now takes you 40 minutes to get off, and sex with humans becomes simply foreplay for you main love of the magic wand, then perhaps it’s time to slow down and reevaluate your masturbatory goals.

This bad boy works well, it’s easy to use, and for some it’s more addictive and relationship destructive than crack. I think it has it’s uses, but they should be limited. Try at your own risk! It may be the best and easiest orgasms you’ve ever had, but can you keep that to a manageable amount? With no batteries to run out, it may be hours before you put it down, and that may be too much!
